Abstract

Within this investigation the Holderness coastline has been examined with erosion over time. A site which has been focused on is the bay between Sewerby and Hilderthorpe, as the boulder clay constructing the bay erodes at a faster rate than the surrounding areas.

The website will show how the Holderness coastline has changed over time, the change in the coastline is suggested to retreat over a number of years due to erosion, the conclusion to this website will prove this statement made by Quinn in 2009 is true. Using remote sensing and GIS methods, maps and images will display the coast at different years to show changes and erosion rates. The Holderness coast has lost villages, homes and farms to the sea causing the movement of people out of the area.

Digimap, google earth, census data and historic survey data are the main sources of information used to construct maps in ArcMap to identify and analyses coastal retreat from 1822 to the present day.  Groynes were established in 1991 but unfortunately did not have a great effect on the coastline as erosion was still a big factor in the change of the coastline. The website will display the change over time with the predicted retreat of the coastline with the use of many sources of information using GIS and remote sensing.
