Erosion of the Holderness coastline
By Jennifer Winnard-Sivill

Step by step methods
-
Digimap was used to collect information of the Holderness coastline from a range of different times including the present.
-
ArcMap is used to open raster data files.
-
Mosaic raster data from each historical data set.
-
An ordnance survey map was collected from digimap.
-
On ArcMap the ordnance survey map was place underneath a historical data map, a shapefile polyline was created and plotted along the coastline. Repeat the process so that 5 polylines were created to show the coastline at different times. Each polyline had to be changed to a different colour to define which year the coastline was from.
-
Historical data maps were removed to display the ordnance survey map with the coastline of previous years showing the retreat.
-
The retreat of the coastline was measured within ArcMap with a ruler, the distance was recorded every 200metres and collecting an average retreat for the whole of the coastline.
-
A satellite image was downloaded, with the use of georeferencing it was placed over the ordnance survey map displaying land structure.
-
Scientist predicted the further retreat in coastline for the future which was plotted using a shapefile.
-
Census wards were displayed on the map, constructing a shapefile above the focus site.
-
The effect of fading was used to see information through the shapefile.
-
A census wards and sub division was presented on the data over the map to show the area of study. A polyline again was constructed around the area. Each census ward and sub division was changed to a different colour to be easily identified.
-
Using census data population and buildings were collected however as there were major gaps in data few could be plotted along the site of interest. If this was to work for Bridlington the area would be highlighted which graph or numbers displayed on each to display population density and what the buildings in the area are used for. This method was completed however information was only provided for the town further inland.
-
The population was collected from the internet for Bridlington this allowed the area of the site to be collected.
-
With a rough estimation of population and area as a result density was calculated.
